Work is underway on the Family Park in Bengħajsa to expand this park in the southern part of the country by an additional 7,000 square meters.

The site was visited by the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli, along with Project Green and the Birżebbuġa Local Council.
After Project Green worked on the design of this phase of the project and permits were issued, work has now begun. At present, overgrown weeds are being cleared to allow for surveying work and analysis of soil conditions, ensuring there is no negative impact on biodiversity. As part of the project, 141 trees and numerous shrubs will be planted.
“The Bengħajsa Family Park is serving as a green lung for this community, and as time goes on, more families are enjoying it. We are ensuring that the Bengħajsa Park not only expands and becomes more accessible but also adds value to the community,” said Minister Miriam Dalli.
The project includes the installation of a geogrid pavement to stabilize the soil and provide an accessible pathway. A 290-cubic-metre water reservoir will also be built, enabling an irrigation system to be set up for watering the area.
This extension, part of the Bengħajsa Park, will be preserved in its natural state to minimise the impact on the area’s natural topography. As part of the process, play equipment such as slides and inclusive facilities like accessible swings and ramps will be introduced to make the park fully accessible.
Project Green’s Head of Project Implementation, Liana Saliba Gazzano said, “During this phase of the project, we are seeing the Bengħajsa Park continue to grow, with this area being rehabilitated so that more families can enjoy the park. With this extension, the park will now reach around 1,700 people living within a ten-minute walk.”
This project is part financed by the European Union through MEASURE 8.5.
