Independence Garden is a key recreational space for the village of Birżebbuġa. The works were carried out in close consultation with the local council to ensure the garden fulfils its role as a community-oriented area.

Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli visited the newly transformed space along with the leadership of Project Green and the Birżebbuġa Local Council. “This project is part of a broader vision to continue creating open spaces in all communities and tangibly improving quality of life. Birżebbuġa deserves a space like this — a garden that serves as a functional meeting place for the community while also standing out for its visual appeal,” stated Minister Miriam Dalli.

The garden spans 1,700 square meters and had long been in a state of neglect, with structural issues persisting for years. The regeneration project included the construction of new walls, planting of 20 new trees, levelling of the terrain, installation of new equipment, and shaded areas for added comfort. To enhance accessibility, ramps were added at the garden’s entrances. Project Green integrated environmentally friendly elements by using more sustainable materials and introducing a new efficient irrigation system.

On behalf of Project Green, Architect and Chief Operations Officer Beverley Costa highlighted the importance of creating a space that blends functionality with sustainability. “Our vision for Independence Garden was to create a community space in Birżebbuġa that serves as both a community meeting point and a place for rest and relaxation. We incorporated elements that encourage relaxation and accessibility, while respecting the natural environment. This project marks another significant step in the development of urban spaces that foster a sense of community,” said Architect Costa.

Speaking on behalf of the Birżebbuġa Local Council, Mayor Scott Camilleri stated that this project is one of a series of initiatives being undertaken by Project Green in collaboration with the Birżebbuġa Local Council. “Independence Garden, one of the first parks established in the locality, needed restoration and modernization to better serve the current needs of the community. This project stands as a testament to the Council’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all residents,” stated the mayor.
