The Glażiż Garden in Birgu, a site of roughly 9,000 square metres that had long lain abandoned, has been rehabilitated into a recreational space for families.

Prime Minister Robert Abela visited the project, after which it was formally inaugurated by pupils from Birgu Primary School within St Margaret College.
Dr Abela emphasised that this is one in a series of initiatives through which the Government is honouring its election pledge to provide residents with open spaces situated in the heart of their communities and close to where they live. He added that the garden will offer families a place in which to spend quality time together.
The Prime Minister noted that, following other major projects in Cottonera—such as the regeneration of Kalkara Square and waterfront—Birgu is likewise benefiting from investment and a people-centred project of high quality. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to continue creating localities with more open spaces that can be enjoyed by residents, families and children. During an informal discussion, the children present affirmed that additional green areas in the town centre not only improve its appearance but also form part of residents’ community life. They later took part in various educational activities around the garden.
The works respected the existing environment. The garden now features several recreational zones, including picnic areas, children’s play equipment and a dog park. All new fixtures are made from natural and recycled materials, while a new lighting system powered by solar energy and security cameras have been installed. The project was executed by GreenServ, a branch of WasteServ that implements green projects in urban areas.
Environment, Energy and Grand Harbour Regeneration Minister Miriam Dalli, who was also present, stressed the importance of such spaces for the community. She said it was gratifying to see pupils of various ages enjoying the garden and enriching their educational experience outside the traditional classroom setting. Through this garden, she added, new life is being breathed into the area, further improving the quality of life of residents in Cottonera and its surroundings.
WasteServ Chief Executive Richard Bilocca, Birgu Mayor John Boxall and Birgu Local Councillors also attended the inauguration. Next Saturday, from 4 p.m. onwards, a family entertainment event will be held in the garden.
