Regenerating a Neglected Site into a Sustainable Green Space Near Simar Nature Reserve
Located next to the Simar Nature Reserve in San Pawl il-Baħar, this project transformed an abandoned 4,000 square metre site previously affected by illegal dumping into a safe, accessible, and environmentally sensitive public space. The intervention included accessible pathways and ramps, landscaping with native species, sustainable irrigation systems, recycled-material furniture, educational signage, and safety infrastructure such as CCTV systems and perimeter enclosures. Designed in full respect of the surrounding Natura 2000 ecosystem, the project strengthened biodiversity, improved accessibility for more than 700 nearby residents within walking distance, and enhanced the ecological value of the surrounding natural environment.
