This initiative encourages various organisations and groups to organise and participate in cleanups under the ‘Islands Cleanup’ initiative to raise awareness about environmental protection in valleys and beaches. Concurrently, Project Green commits to planting two trees for every ton of waste collected.

This initiative proves to be successful every year. In the 2023 edition alone, over 2,000 tons of waste were collected, leading to the planting of 4,000 new trees.

This year’s edition was launched during a cleanup at the valley and beach of Ġnejna, where around a tonne of waste was collected by employees of Project Green and the Ministry in a team-building activity. Similarly, private companies, schools, non-governmental entities, and other groups are encouraged to register their cleanup activities. They contribute to a better environment and fulfill their corporate social responsibility by doing so. Registered groups are provided with necessary tools such as gloves, bags, waste transportation, and safety instructions to ensure a safe and efficient cleanup process.

Participants will be assisted in weighing the waste collected during their cleanup activity. This waste will be sorted on-site according to waste separation regulations, and recyclable materials will be recycled. Participants will also receive a certificate of participation for their efforts towards a better environment.

Minister for the Environment, Energy, and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli, who joined Project Green and ‘Saving Our Blue’ employees during the activity, said, “I congratulate the entities that, for another year, are organising and participating in cleanups, and I encourage more organizations and groups to join us. Activities like these bring us closer to our valleys and seas, increasing awareness against illegal waste disposal.”
