Earth Sunday at Ta’ Qali’s Picnic Area celebrates Earth Day
Sustainable crafts, artisanal products, potting of plants and herbs and live entertainment by local artists were among the activities organised at the Ta’ Qali Picnic Area to mark Earth Day. The event, organised by Project Green in close collaboration with the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise and the Parliamentary Secretariat for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, was a resounding success as hundreds of families gathered for a fun-filled day.
Supporting the event with their participation were Circular Economy Malta, ERA, WasteServ, Ambjent Malta, Saving Our Blue and EcoMarket. From learning about environmental protection to discovering artisanal products made from sustainable materials, how to plant and take care of flowers, horse-riding, and fun entertainment by DanUSan, the day indeed catered for all ages.
Children enjoyed participating in activities such as an educational puppet show, potting, grafting and sensory box in which they could create their ideal open space. Meadow Strings, Joemike & Lydon, Kantera and Claudia Faniello provided fun music for all whilst attendees savoured food from the food stalls. Others enjoyed a picnic under the sun, entertained by the activities around them.
Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise Miriam Dalli said such activities not only help us attract more visitors to the island’s open spaces but also serve as an educational platform on sustainability and the environment. “The more events we organise, the more people attend, and this gives us the positive energy to keep on going. On Earth Day, we wanted to show people how they can live a sustainable life and I am glad to see that people have responded to our call and joined us today at Earth Sunday,” said Minister Miriam Dalli.
Parliamentary Secretary, Alicia Bugeja Said said how the love for animals became more evident during this event. Activities like Earth Sunday are important so that our families enjoy time in our green open spaces, whilst they have more time to interact and engage with animals experiencing all the love they have to offer.
Steve Ellul, Project Green CEO explained how Project Green is continuously striving to increase the use of green open spaces and is thus organising multiple events every month. Ellul said that education is key in taking care of our environment, whereby in these events Project Green sets up a stand organising interactive workshops, conducted by Project Green employees, to educate people of all ages on the importance of increasing biodiversity through the planting of trees and other plants whilst handing them compostable pots containing herbs so they can take an active role in growing their own plants at home. He concluded by saying that Earth Day is not just today but every day and we make sure to promote this throughout the whole year at Project Green. Admittance to the event was free of charge.
