Project Green is placing community engagement at the heart of all its green projects, from planning stage to implementation and beyond.

The new agency is entrusted with the Government’s seven year plan to invest €700 million in the creation, maintenance and invigoration of public gardens and other open spaces in Malta and Gozo, for everyone to enjoy green recreational spaces a short walk from home, wherever they live.

During the first few months of 2023, this new agency will launch the planning of several major projects, including large-scale transformations of existing roads and piazzas into new green lungs in different localities.

In fact, the agency is soon reaching out to San Gwann residents and other stakeholders to discuss the preliminary plans for the regeneration of the centre of this locality. The project will include a short vehicular underpass in Ir-Rihan Avenue, one of Malta’s busiest roads, and an adjacent underground car park. This underground infrastructure will open up 6,500 square metres of existing asphalted surfaces outside the locality’s parish church for the creation of a new green open space for the community.

Through this consultation process in close collaboration with the San Gwann Local Council, Project Green will seek the residents’ views on their aspirations for this new open space.

The new agency will also be consulting Cospicua residents to finalise its plans for a new underground car park and an overlying 2,000-square-metre garden in a neglected site previously earmarked for building development.

The planning of these projects will be the blueprint of the agency’s approach to other important green investments in coming years, as part of the Government’s seven-year commitment to open up more open spaces in Malta and Gozo.
